May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. More than 80,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Canada each year; more than 5,000 of these are melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Young or old, we all need to take care throughout May and the rest of the year. Here’s how you can help protect your loved ones.
We all need sunlight; the sun makes us feel happy, energized, and provides essential Vitamin D, but too much of the sun’s harmful rays can cause serious health problems. This May, we want to help spread the word about Skin Cancer Awareness Month by giving you some helpful tips.
Outside of the home
We all know how to take care of our skin outside of the home but here’s a quick reminder:
- Make sure you wear suitably strong sun cream and make sure it’s not last year’s! It deteriorates and can leave you unknowingly under-protected.
- Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes (make sure they have a UVA/UVB filter).
- Put a sun hat on if you will be out for extended periods. Your head may not get sun cream, but it is still exposed to the sun’s rays.
- Avoid using tanning lotions, sunbeds or nasal sprays that amplify tan and therefore skin damage.
Inside of the home
You may feel protected once you’re behind closed doors, but you are still being consistently hit with UV light. Bright, sunny windows make a home look its best but be aware that you are letting in harmful UV rays along with the light.
What to do
Attempting to block out natural light is an ineffective and untenable option. Instead, use a UV window film, such as our range of Llumar films, to block 99% of UV rays whilst still letting in plentiful sunlight. Llumar’s UVShield technology was designed to protect your skin and has been fully tested and accredited by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Window film is quick and simple for our team to install and much cheaper than replacing the glass. You’ll hardly notice the difference, but your skin definitely will.
Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Skin cancer usually occurs through accumulated damage, and by minimising your exposure to UVA and UVB rays indoors and out, you reduce your risk. Managing your exposure to these harmful rays needs to become second nature for you and your loved ones. Skin Cancer Awareness Month is a fantastic reminder of what we should all be doing, but please, maintain these precautions year-round. Even when the sun is low, you are still being exposed so make every day a good day for your skin.
